Over the past year Mitsubishi has been in the process of reevaluating its lineup and goals, and following the success of the brand’s incredibly popular Outlander and Outlander Sport SUVs, Mitsubishi has decided to focus company efforts on the SUV segment – with a twist. Over the next five years, plans to introduce three new electric SUVs, including an electric Outlander Sport, will go into motion.

As of right now, Mitsubishi only has one plug-in vehicle in its lineup – the i-MiEV, which has not seen a next-generation update since 2009. The company announced it has no plans to update the i-MiEV, instead opting to bring new electric vehicles into the US Mitsubishi product line. The first on the list is the Outlander PHEV, which will be introduced in May 2016. Following the Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi says it has plans to launch a small, coupe-styled crossover in 2017 and finally an Outlander Sport EV by 2019.

The electric Outlander Sport is expected to accompany the released of a next generation of Mitsubishi’s Outlander SUV model and its variants. All of the electric models will also come with gasoline equivalents, but expanding the company’s EV lineup is definitely an attempt on behalf of Mitsubishi to draw in a niche consumer base interested in eco-friendly fuel alternatives.
