It’s time to throw away all of your preconceived notions about the superiority of gasoline engines over electric motors. It’s easy to believe that they are inherently faster and more powerful. But the results at the most recent competition at Pike’s Peak might inspire you to jettison this outdated idea.
AutoWeek wrote in their race coverage, “While gasoline-powered cars still rule the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb…the electron-powered racers are catching up fast.”
And by electron-powered racers, we mean Mitsubishi electron-powered racers. The Japanese automaker put together quite a team this year.
Drivers Hiroshi Masuoka and Greg Tracy each manned a Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III. “Each hacked more than 30 seconds off the PPIHC EV record time” getting up the mountain. As if that wasn’t enough, Tracy’s time came within a mere 2.387 seconds of the top time set by a gasoline-powered car.
